ZEISS have just announced their new Supreme Prime Radiance lenses, which will be shown for the first time at the CAMERIMAGE International Film Festival in Poland. Another new lens you say what’s different about this one ? Well for a start this 7 lens set has all the benefits of ZEISS Supreme Prime lenses with the addition of controllable flares…all down to a new T*blue coating apparently.
The new Radiance lenses are available in a seven-lens set: 21 mm, 25 mm, 29 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm and 100 mm – all T1.5. As with the Supreme Prime lenses, the Radiance lenses are available in PL-mount or ARRI LPL-mount with ZEISS eXtended Data. While they are warmer than the regular Supreme Primes, Zeiss feels that they still match very well which is why they left out the extreme focal lengths on both ends.
New T*blue coating
In response to cinematographers who wanted more creative freedom instead of just uncoating the lens elements ZEISS developed a new lens coating T* blue. Under regular lighting, Supreme Prime Radiance render like modern and versatile cinematography lenses. With appropriate lighting however, the lenses start to flare allowing Cinematographers to decide and plan when they want to create flares and how much.
Footage
Seeing is believing so they say so ZEISS asked cinematographer’s Takuro Ishizak JSC, and Rodrigo Prieto ASC, AMC to shoot two films to demonstrate the advantages for these new lenses.
‘Metamorphosis’ was shot by Takuro Ishizak JSC and ‘R&R’ by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto ASC, AMC. This and a comparison Supreme Prime Radiance and Supreme Prime film shot by cinematographer Takuro Ishizaka (JSC) on SONY Venice is available to see below:
