What is HDR (High Dynamic Range) ? is it like 3D…no not in what it does but similar in terms of it being a fad that comes around every so often, is over used in the wrong applications and then goes away again till the next time manufacturers need a new buzz word to sell more TV’s. O.K. perhaps I’m being a bit cynical and HDR will make a difference to the general public and the creative industry. Evidence so far indicates it’s not going away anytime soon.
The idea behind HDR is simple; make the image you are recording look more lifelike by showing more details in both the dark and bright areas of the picture. A trick your eye and brain seem to do quite easily. This increase in dynamic range is something high-tech cameras have been able to achieve long before the display devices (TV’s and monitors).
Unfortunately, the implementation of HDR has been made more confusing by the introduction of different variants. At the moment there are five different varieties of HDR: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.
