The Canon EOS C100 has been a favourite among videographers and cinematographers working in the corporate video world, music videos and live events. Wedding videographers have long benefited from the incredible low-light performance of the Mark II predecessor, and the ability to use a large Super 35mm sensor with the high optical quality of Canon EF and EF-S lenses without having to resort to adapters. Canon recently announced the EOS C100 Mark II, and according to them the most significant about the Canon EOS C100 Mark II Digital Video Camera is that most of the new or improved features compared to its predecessor were added in direct response to feedback from their customers, who were using their C100's on a daily basis in the field. Designed as a one-person production beast, the EOS C100 has proven to be a widely popular model, and the new and improved Mark II, improves on the already popular original version, by adding some exciting and welcomed new features and components just where it matters. Among our favourite new features are the redesigned OLED display, the larger adjustable viewfinder, advanced autofocus capabilities, dual AVCHD and MP4 file formats with multiple recording options including slow-motion at 1920 x 1080 50p/60p image capture, and wireless network compatibilities. We've summarised the most exciting new features and improvements in the Canon EOS C100 Mark II we think will help you along on your video productions and improve your experience:
    • •   DIGIC DV 4 – A More Powerful Image Processor, including improved ISO's for better low-light performance and less noise in the shadows when shooting in light deprived conditions. In addition, the new Digic 4 engine allows for a significant reduction in the occurance of aliasing artefacts and moire “rainbow” patterns on brick walls and certain fine fabrics

    • •   Improved Viewing: Side Hinged OLED Display and a New Large Adjustable EVF - Allowing for low-angle shooting scenarios or in places where the camera is placed at an awkward angle relative to the camera operator. The C100 Mark II uses a new 3.5-inch 1.23 megapixel OLED display panel that offers approximately 100% field-of-view coverage with a 28.2° wide viewing angle, wide colour range support, and improved viewing in brightly lit situations such as shooting outdoors.

    • •   Built-In Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Face AF Autofocus - first introduced in the EOS 70D DSLR and available as a paid feature upgrade on the original C100 & C300, built-in Dual Pixel Autofocus or abreviated for simplicity as DAF is available on the EOS C100 Mark II at no extra cost. This feature makes incredibly smooth and consistent autofocus, so focus transitions are natural and subjects remain tracked as they move -- as long as you keep the subject in the center portion of the frame. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is compatible with over 103 Canon EF lenses, and if an STM lens is used, face detection AF becomes possible. This feature, when enabled, allows for incredibly responsive and reliable contrast detection auto-focusing. Face AF is capable of tracking more than one face at a time, allowing the shooter to switch from one face in frame to another. The result of this is a focusing that will detect and focus on faces in virtually the entire image area of the frame.

    • •   59.94P/50.00P Recording – slow-motion recording in true 50p and 60p is possible on the C100 Mark II unlocking your creative potential for some exciting new shots for your music or corporate video

    • •   Built–In Microphone in the Camera Body – very useful in editing as you can have a scratch track, or in the case of ENG “run and gun” situations where a separate audio recording may not be possible you can always rely on having an audio recording. Although not a replacement for higher bit rate broadcast level audio via the XLR inputs or through a separate field recorder, on-board audio is always welcomed and can sometimes be helpful.

    • •   Canon Log LUT for Corrected On-Set Viewing - Canon Log gives you a flat and very grade-able images, providing maximum dynamic range for post-production, but in its ungraded form doesn’t accurately represent what the final image will look like while the camera’s output is viewed on a monitor. The EOS C100 Mark II has a new option that offers a built-in Canon LOG LUT (Look Up Table). It allows for a live, corrected signal to be viewed on a monitor connected through the HDMI. Corrected images can be viewed in Wide DR or BT.709 colour spaces. Since this would be used for monitoring only, the Canon Log LUT can be turned on or off in the camera’s menu when you want to record the uncompressed HDMI output on an external recorder.

    • •   A Cleaner Uncompressed Output over the HDMI – With the addition of the newly developed DIGIC DV 4 Processor, the uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 8-bit video signal (with time code data and 2:3 pull-down markers superimposed) output over the HDMI, should be cleaner with fewer visual artefacts and less noise at high ISO settings. Additionally, you can output 1920 x 1080 50p/59.94p through the HDMI.

  • •   Expanded ISO settings from ISO 320 to 102,400 – Allowing for greater low-light performance, as was the original C100, the Mark II has an expanded ISO capability of up to 102,400 allowing users to capture incredible stories in light starved environments.
