Sony recently held a seminar on the wide variety of lens options for their E-mount cameras likes the full-frame Sony A7s and Super 35 Sony PXW-FS7. The seminar is entitled "An original approach to 35mm optical systems design for still & motion picture shooting" and covers input from both Sony engineers, Zeiss representatives and award-winning DoPs.
With the DSLR revolution from a few year back, which has now evolved into more of a mirrorless revolution of sorts, a field currently dominated with Sony cameras predominantly in the world of video, came a dramatic increase of still photography lenses for motion picture production use.
Widely established still photography lens systems designs are highly optimized for still shooting, but frequently lack important features for motion picture production. With the E-Mount, Sony launched a different approach to lens design that gives equal importance to motion picture production. Presenters in this seminar: Motoyuki Ohtake — Distinguished Engineer, Optical Design Dept., Digital Imaging Group, Sony Corporation; Richard Schleuning — National Sales Manager, International Sales Americas, Carl Zeiss AG; Jon Fauer — Publisher, Editor of Film & Digital Times, Member of ICG, DGA and ASC. Jon Fauer, ASC, award-winning director and cinematographer, author of more than a dozen best-selling books on cinematography and digital imaging, discusses with session presenters Motoyuki Ohtake of Sony, and Richard Schleuning of Carl Zeiss. Jon has taught at Dartmouth College, his alma mater, Columbia University, NYU, and many other places. So if you want to learn more about Sony full-frame and APS-C lenses, as well as the 28-135mm F4.0 OSS G lens commony used with the Sony FS7, sit back, grab a cup of tea and enjoy this (rather technical at time, but very informative) seminar. Over here at Visual Impact, we specialise in professional video equipment, and love the new PXW-FS7 from Sony as well as the A7s, which have both been taking the broadcast and professional video world by storm.
