The flagship Sony A7R II and A7S II cameras are significant achievements for Sony in terms of technical prowess, but upon release some cameras of this range had some issues with overheating when recording in 4K internally for extended periods of time, but now Sony has issues a firmware update to remedy this phenomenon. Here's the details of Firmware Update 3.0: Benefits and improvements:
    • Extends the 4K movie recording time by approx. 20% when the vertical grip (VG-C2EM) is being used or when APS-C/Super35mm mode is being activated. * The maximum continuous recording time is 29 minutes.
  • Improves handling of chromatic aberration - overall picture quality

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 3.00:

  • Adds the selectable feature for uncompressed 14-Bit RAW image capture
  • Adds support to output video via HDMI during use of the Remote Camera Control software (still mode only)
  • Reduces the chance of the camera changing to front focus when shooting certain scenes. Note: This symptom rarely occurs.
  • Decreases chroma noise when Long Exposure NR (Noise Reduction) is set to Off. Note: The noise does not occur when Long Exposure NR is set to On.
  • Improves continuous shooting at Hi speed so that it can be used just as long when using the flash as without the flash.
Here are some tests by A7R II users, who've tested the firmware update and report no overheating issues. This firmware upgrade solves a lot of headaches for videographers, who use these cameras to shoot corporate videos, interviews and even long-form events.
