The new OConnor 2560 Fluid Head is often referred to by industry professionals as the "baby brother" to the 2575D as it now offers cinematographers even more versatility and choice when it comes to the latest digital cinema camera systems, which are getting more compact with every generation.
The 2560 offers the same OConnor patented sinusoidal counterbalance system for true, accurate balance at any point in the tilt range in combination with the company’s step-less, ultra-smooth pan & tilt fluid drag.
Recently, Alex Buono - a renowed cinematographer known mostly for his continuous work on one of America's top programmes - Saturday Night Live (SNL), shared his experience using the 2650 fluid head on a recent sketch for the show called "Love Struck" starring UFC champion Ronda Rousey.
Alex developed an effective workflow for the fast-paced SNL production environemtn by matching his main cameras – often either a RED Dragon or an ARRI ALEXA Mini with the new OConnor 2560 fluid head. The amazing advantage of the new 2560 head is that it features same functionality as the bigger 2575, while being specifically designed to match the needs of any portable configuration or lightweight digital cinema cameras of today including, but certainly not limited to the new lightweight Varicam LT, Canon C300 Mark II or the Sony F55.
According to Buono
“OConnor filled a hole in the market with the 2560 –usually you’re just forced to make a choice between the two extremes. All of the cameras now, even at their most built up, are probably under 50 lbs, so the 2560 is a perfect fit.”
The new 2560 fluid head offers around 30% weight reduction compared to the 2575, a major plus according to Buono, which helped him and his crew to move very quickly from setup to setup in the fast paced SNL production enviroment.
“There’s a lot of gear from other companies that feels like they’re just trying to hit some incredible tech spec, yet it’s ergonomically impossible to use. But OConnor does a good job of identifying what actually is going to work in the field and what we need and don’t need. It feels like they listen to camera operators and not every manufacturer does that. I’ve used a lot of different fluid heads, but OConnor is just so far above and beyond the performance of every other fluid head in the market.”
The OConnor Ultimate 2560 fluid head features a lightweight magnesium construction ensuring a best-in-class performance and an incredible power to weight ratio. The head itself weighs less than 18 pounds, while being able to support camera payloads up to 66 pounds. In addition, each head comes with a carbon fiber cover for improved stiffness and maximum durability in extreme conditions.
