Nikon Announces New Flagship D5 Full-Frame Beast with 4K Video and 3 Millions ISO at CES 2016
After much anticipation and rumours at this years CES in Las Vegas, Nikon finally unveiled their new D5 flagship full-frame camera which can go up to ISO 3.28 Million and basically see in the dark.
The new Nikon big-boy camera body features a brand new Full-Frame 20.8 MP sensor with an EXPEED 5 processor, and native ISO up to 102,400, which can be extended to the absolutely crazy ISO of 3.28 Million! On the stills front, the camera features a 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors and a dedicated AF processor for ultimate image quality.
Nikon D5 Features
New 20.8MP FX-format CMOS image sensor and EXPEED 5 image processing
Widest native ISO range ever in a Nikon full-frame DSLR: ISO 100 to 102,400 (expandable to Hi-5, ISO 3,280,000)
Redesigned AF system with a 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors and a dedicated processor
4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) video recording and pro-grade video features
12 fps continuous shooting with full AF and AE performance; up to 200 shots in a single burst
Dual XQD/CF slots - depending on which camera version - one XQD only, and one CF cards only.
For stills photographs there is no doubt that the Nikon D5 will deliver outstanding images, but for those interested in the video side of things - the good news here is that the D5 can do UHD at 24/25 or 30p at a crop of 1.5x (approximately APS-C size for UHD video) or use the full sensor for Full HD capture up to 60p. Uncompressed output to external 4K recorders like the Video Devices PIX-E7, Convergent Design Odyssey7Q+ or the Atomos Ninja Assasssin.
One more important note about the 4K recording - internal recording is limited to 3 minutes when shooting in UHD.
Interestingly enough there will be two versions of the D5 - one for XQD media cards and another for Compact Flash. Both will be priced the same and both will have identical features apart from the media they use. It is good to see Nikon continuing their commitment to XQD media, which we mostly know from the Sony FS7 professional camcorder.
Both the XQD and CF versions of the the Nikon D5 are expected to start shipping in March 2016 at a price of $6,500 USD.
*UK Pricing is yet to be confirmed.
