ARRI Exclusive Behind the Scenes "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power"

ARRI has just released an exclusive behind the scenes look at the production of the Amazon hit series “The Rings of Power”. The Lord of the Rings based series was filmed in large format on ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA LF cameras paired with ARRI DNA lenses, which gave the show’s unique epic look and also allowed the cinematographer to get the desired level of depth of field without having to shoot wide open. The behind the scenes provides a detailed look at how the DoP and VFX team worked together to achieve the hellish look of the Eruption of Mount Doom sequence, which was filmed both on a sound stage and in parts on location. Hundreds of ARRI Skypanel S60’s and S360’s were deployed on the sound stage to provide a very tight and precise colour spectrum and allow the VFX team to create the scene’s unique look. While on the other hand, a tobacco colour filter was used for the exterior sequences, which were then graded further in post. Camera and lens metadata also played a pivotal role in the show’s post production pipeline, which relied heavily on a cloud-based workflow.

RED Komodo-X Announcement

RED has officially unveiled the KOMODO-X 6K camera. Building on the success of the original Komodo, the new model features a slightly bigger body design with a built-in micro V-lock battery plate and a new RF locking mount for a more secure lens fit. The camera inherits the same 20 megapixel Super 35 Global Shutter sensor, however according to RED, the sensor in the new Komodo-X has an updated pixel design, which should provide cleaner shadows. The camera also records onto the newer and faster Cfast Express Type B cards, which allow it to record higher frame rates such as 6K at 80fps and 4K at 120fps in various REDCODE RAW compressions such as HQ, MQ, LQ, and ELQ. Apple ProRes recording options up to 4444 XQ are also available.

SmallHD Indie 5 Monitor Kit with RED Control

And speaking of the new Red Komodo X, SmallHD has released their new Indie 5 monitor kit with RED camera control license and required cabling for Komodo and the DSCM3 line-up of cameras. The SmallHD Indie 5 is an excellent monitoring option for the RED Komodo cameras providing convenient control functions such as run/stop, exposure controls, status, recording formats, playback, menu control, and a lot more via the monitor touchscreen. The Indie 5 offers a daylight viewable Full HD display with 1000nits brightness, 10bit colour depth and Rec.709 support all packed into a lightweight and durable design.
