This week we are featuring the newly released firmware update and texture options for the ARRI ALEXA 35, Cooke's introduction of four new lenses to their S8 FF cine prime line-up and the new ultra-high speed Phantom T4040 camera from Vision Research.
ARRI has announced New Textures and a new firmware update for the ALEXA 35. The latest SUP 1.0.4 for the ALEXA 35 is a minor, but important update, which fixes some bugs reported from users in the field such as a fix for some SDI metadata issues, an Auto White Balance timeout, as well as playback with attached Master Grips. This update also contains important stability improvements as well as improved lens metadata relating to Cooke/i lenses. In addition, ARRI also added four new Textures such as Custom Smooth and Soft Nostalgic, which can be selected in camera to give cinematographers more creative options. Much like different film stocks, the 30+ ARRI Textures can be used to give the footage a unique look such as a higher contrast look or a more vintage and organic feel.
Cooke has introduced four new additions to their S8 FF cine primes. The new lenses include a wide-angle 18mm and 27mm as well as a standard length 35mm and a mid-telephoto 65mm, bringing the current total in the lineup to 11 lenses with five more due for release later in 2023. Designed for the latest generation large format cine cameras, the Cooke S8 cine primes feature a very fast T1.4 maximum aperture and an all-spherical design. Optimised for contrast and film-like images, the S8’s deliver the famous Cooke Look with high resolution, pleasing and organic skin tones, smooth spherical bokeh and minimal colour fringing making them a favourite among top tier DoPs.
There is a new ultra-high speed Phantom camera from Vision Research capable of 9,000+ frame rates per second at 2.5K resolution. The new Phantom T4040 features a back illuminated Super 35 sensor capable of some extremely impressive numbers when it comes to resolution and speed including up to 13,000+ fps in 2K and even 20,000 fps in sub HD resolutions. The highly specialised camera also features EDR, or Extreme Dynamic Range, which helps to dynamically adjust exposure in saturated parts of the image, and also supports direct recording to a Phantom CineMag removable flash memory drive up to 8TB for extended takes. The T4040 also supports 10Gb Ethernet for significantly faster data downloads directly from the camera buffer.
