Welcome to the latest issue of our weekly roundup of news from the TV and film industry.
This week we are featuring Blackmagic Design’s new external GPU for filmmakers, editors and content creators working with the latest Mac machines, a new firmware update from Atomos to their AtomOS that drives the new 5-inch Ninja V recorder/monitor and Freefly Systems are expanding their MoVI ecosystems with the introduction of the new MoVI Wheels.
Blackmagic Design eGPU Pro
Blackmagic Design announced a new external GPU for filmmakers, editors and content creators working with Mac machines. The new Blackmagic eGPU Pro includes the faster Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card paired with 8 GBs of RAM, compared to the recently announced Blackmagic eGPU, which featured the slower, but less expensive Radeon Pro 580. The new Blackmagic eGPU Pro is compatible with all Thunderbolt 3 enabled Macs, Macbooks or the new Mac Mini, as it features two Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI 2.0 connectivity and four USB 3 ports. The eGPU Pro is a bit pricey at 1200 pounds and it is scheduled to ship later in November.
AtomOS firmware 10.01
Atomos have released a new firmware update 10.01 to their AtomOS operating system driving the new 5-inch Ninja V recorder/monitor. The latest firmware update does not add any new features, but it is important as it fixes a few issues and some small bugs. AtomOS 10 on the Ninja V brings a few changes to the interface compared to the Inferno or Sumo, such as new transparent touchscreen buttons, which are less obtrusive given the smaller 5-inch display, the HDR slider is gone and is now replaced with touchscreen buttons for colour spaces making it easier for users to monitor in either Rec 709, HLG or PQ.
MoVI Wheels
Freefly Systems are expanding their Movi ecosystems with the introduction of the new MoVI Wheels, designed to bring extremely smooth, precise and classic camera movement controls to the Movi Pro, Movi XL and some of their previous generation gimbal stabilizers such as the M10 and M5. Available in either brass or stainless steel, the MoVI Wheels have been designed with maximum flexibility in mind, giving operators control over Pan, Tilt, and even Roll axis depending on the configuration required for your shoot.
