The NAB Show is big! I mean, really big. Nearly 950,000 square feet of the latest and greatest in professional video, audio, post-production and broadcast technology at the heart of the Nevada desert – Las Vegas. 26,000+ international attendees from 159 countries - all fixated on the latest cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and broadcast transmission infrastructure that money can buy today. Just like prior years, it's the place for big announcements, and there were a few. It's the best time of the year for manufacturers, dealers, distributors and end users to share a roof and get together for an unforgettable experience.
Most times, it's the new shiny cameras that make the front page news, but as technology evolves, and cameras as well as just about anything else in the video industry gets smaller and smaller, while packed with big features, new and innovative monitoring tools like the new SmallHD 502 take centre stage. It may be small, but what's inside is anything but.
Quite possibly one of the most popular bits of kit at this years NAB Show, the SmallHD 502 comes in a small package, but packed with really big professional features. Sporting a state-of-the-art 441 ppi, 5-inch Full HD 1920 x 1080 screen with 85% of NTSC Colour gamut coverage, the 502 monitor has some impressive features.
3D LUT support is probably the biggest one of them all. Users have the ability to load their own custom 3D LUTs from DaVinci Resolve or other grading software and monitor their footage on set with confidence that their footage gets the closest look to their final deliverable.
A back button and a simple, but very well made and intuitive joystick complete the user interface and make up for a really slick design. The SmallHD 502 also features peaking, false colour, zebras and more. On the outside, the 502 has both HDMI and HD-SDI I/O for cross conversion and output to other monitoring devices, so pretty much any camera on the market can benefit from the stellar features of the SmallHD 502. The unit is powered by 2 x Canon LP-E6 type batteries used in popular DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D Mark III and the 7D Mark II, which are readily available and quite affordable.
The compact size of the 502 monitor makes it perfect for 3-axis gimbal stabilisers. However, regardless of whether you use with a Sony A7s, or a Sony PMW-F5 or an FS7, the SmallHD 502 will help you get the best out of your footage with colour accuracy and precision usually reserved for much higher price point models.
The Sidefinder accessory (sold separately) turns the stunning 5-inch monitor, into a full-blown professional electronic viewinder. See our video from the NAB Show floor below for the latest on the Sidefinder and the SmallHD 502 monitor.
