More Footage From The 4K Capable Canon XC10 Hybrid Camera
One of the major announcements by Canon at this year's NAB Show in Las Vegas was of course the highly-anticipated successor the Canon EOS C300, named appropriately in Canon style to the EOS C300 Mark II, this time with 4K on board recording, 4K Raw output and a ton of new features. However, the other big announcement was the smaller, but very capable XC10 hybrid 4K camera.
The XC10 is positioned in the XF range next to the very popular XF305 and XF205 cameras, regular broadcast workhorses, and much like them features a fixed lens camera features a 10x zoom lens optimised for 4K capture, but this time upgrades the sensor size to 1 inch, features a removable hand grip and EVF, and a form factor small enough to fly on a drone or a hand-held gimbal stabiliser like the DJI Ronin / Movi M5 for example.
The camera has been shipping for some time now and filmmakers worldwide have been sharing some amazing footage captured with the XC10. Here are some examples:
The footage above is by Mattias Burling who had this to share about his XC10 experience so far:
The Canon XC10 is really good in low light. Not just for a small chipped camcorder but in general. That is at least the conclusion I came to after shooting this video. Everything is from after the sun left the horizon. It's not a "Night for Day Camera" but definitely an"Evening Camera".The ISO n this video stretches from 500 to 4000. No noise reduction used.
The images from the XC10 are outstanding especially in Wide DR and C-Log gamma, which do require colour correction in post-production, but the payoff is significant. The robust 305Mb 422 in-camera XF-AVC codec provides plenty of room for grading in post and VFX work allowing you to be as creative as you can. Also, footage from the XC10 can be easily intercut whether at 4K or Full HD with other Canon EOS cameras like the C100 , C100 Mark II, C300 and the upcoming C300 Mark II.
Broadcast professionals as well as those productions requiring 50Mb/s 4:2:2 footage will be glad to learn that the XC10 can record in Full HD on affordable SDXC cards, while 4K footage requires Cfast 2.0 compliant memory card for blistering Ultra HD 3840 x 2160p 8bit 422 MXF recording up to 30 frames per second.
12 megapixel 4K still photograph extraction is possible thanks to the high-quality processing via the new DIGIC 5 engine and the 8.29MP 4K 1 inch CMOS sensor. Sensitivity is maxed out at the impressive 20,000 ISO leaving professionals the option to capture beautiful images in low-light situations.
