Zeiss just added a fourth lens to their esteemed LOXIA family of lenses - the new 85mm f2.4 Loxia. The newest telephoto addition gives photographers and video enthusiasts and professionals yet another amazing tool with which to capture stunning images. The Loxia 85mm f2.4 features a similar lightweight and compact design to the rest of the LOXIA line-up.
The new Zeiss 85mm f2.4 has been designed for Sony a7 mirrorless cameras like the A7sII and A7rII, and joins the already existing Loxia 2.8/21, Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50.
The 85mm focal length is a nice addition to the telephoto range and is often a preferred focal length by portrait, street, travel and wedding photographers. For video users - the 85mm will be a nice fit for sit down interviews and corporate work.
“In terms of its technology and the feel of its surface, the Loxia 2.4/85 fits perfectly with the existing focal lengths, and is particularly well suited for portrait photography,” says Christophe Casenave, product manager with ZEISS Camera Lenses.
The new Loxia 2.4/85 features 7 optical elements in 7 groups and has been designed for digital sensors while based on an optimized ZEISS Sonnar design.
The lens has a minimum object distance of 0.80 meters. The manual focus ring has a rotation angle of 220 degrees and enables the subtlest variations of focusing.
The large aperture of f/2.4 combined with the high-quality optical design ensures an appealing bokeh. The electronic interface transfers lens data (EXIF) as well as focus movements. Additionally, if desired by the user, this activates the camera’s loupe function.
“Precise manual focusing with hard stop and the mechanical setting of the aperture (working aperture priority mode) provide sophisticated photographers who don’t want to leave everything to the camera abundant possibilities for composition,” Casenave adds.
Just like the rest of the Loxia range, the new 85mm f2.4 is going to be loved by videographers due to its unique de-click aperture design, which allows for mechanically deactivating the click stops on the aperture ring thus enabling silent and infinite adjustments of the aperture.
Cinematographers using the E-mount Sony PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS5 camcorders or A7sII cameras can benefit from this feature greatly.
Of course the 85mm Loxia is a Zeiss lens after all and as such it features a robust metal barrel and a sealed rubber ring at the back for protection against dust and spray onto the lens mount. In addition, the external diameter, which is uniform across all ZEISS Loxia lenses, simplifies film shoots.
The Loxia 85mm is also compatible with the new ZEISS Lens Gears enabling the use of professional follow focus systems. The Lens Gear Rings in the sizes mini (62 – 69mm, 60 – 67mm with GumGum) fit the Loxia lenses.
According to ZEISS, they are looking to start shipping the new Loxia 2.4/85 at the beginning of December 2016; The lens will be sold with the lens hood. The price upon shipping will be £1,199 inc. VAT.
