Chinese drone and stabiliser manufacturer DJI just announced their brand new Zenmuse Z3 - the company's first ever drone camera with optical zoom and built-in stabilisation. The new Zenumse Z3 zoom-camera is compatible with the DJI Inspire 1 4K quadcopter and the Matrice 100 and 600, but sadly not the smallest OSMO. However, the company has hinted that another version for the OSMO will be revealed later in the Summer.
The Zenmuse Z3 uses the same Sony made 1/2.3-inch camera sensor used in the Phantom 4 and Inspire 1 drone that is capable of shooting 4K up to 30p and 12 megapixel stills images. The Zenmuse Z3 has a 3.5x optical zoom and a 2x digital bringing the total zoom to 7x.
The new zoom camera is positioned to help with search and rescue missions, surveying shoots, fires and other emergency work where flying in closer to the action can be either dangerous or impossible.
The new Zenmuse Z3 is fully compatible with DJI’s GO app, which can act both as a live feed and also as a control system. Users can adjust the camera settings, swipe to zoom in and out, capture photo or video, and activate Intelligent Flight Modes via the GO app.
The Zenmuse Z3 is expected to ship in early August and cost £799 + VAT.
