Just this past Friday at the start of IBC 2015, Sony announced their latest addition to the large sensor XDCAM range - the PXW-FS5. Featuring a similar, ergonomic and compact design we've seen from the FS7, the FS5 is slimmer and smaller, but still has a lot of horsepower under the hood. So, with that said, let's see how it stacks against other cameras from Sony and competing brands, at least on paper.
At IBC, Atomos demonstrates for the first time the 4K 3RU Shogun Studio for Broadcast & Live events, free Shogun upgrades including Canon Raw & Motion Blur time lapse, the 4K HDMI Ninja Assassin at £899 + VAT and price changes on the HD range which see a world first Pro-Res/DNxHR monitor-recorder under £209.
SmallHD announced the iPhone sized 5-inch 502 SDI monitor back at NAB earlier this year, which then they followed up with a more affordable HDMI only version called the 501. Today the US company introduces a daylight viewable, 7-inch, Full HD on-board monitor they will be demoing at their booth at IBC 2015 starting tomorrow.
Ever since they were announced more than three years ago, the PMW F5 and F55 CineAlta cameras have gone from strength to strength. Sony have been adding new features and functionality throughout the years via firmware updates and earlier today Sony shared the details of their latest update. The new firmware version 7.0 will be released in January 2016 and add on BT.Rec 2020 support for F5/F55 and simultaneous MPEG2 HD 422 recording in HD while recording 4K XAVC in SxS Pro+ cards internally.
