Just earlier last week, Canon introduced the next level of their EOS DSLR line-up with not just one, but two new models – the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5DsR. Aimed at high-end photography predominantly in the portraiture, architecture and landscape segment, the new EOS 5Ds and 5DsR are gunning for the ultimate resolution and image quality required for printing large spreads and for situations where sharpness and detail rendition are critical. Although the cameras feature a video recording mode of 1920 x 1080p up to 30 frames per second, the omission of a headphone jack, might leave those wanting to use these cameras for video to look elsewhere. The 5D Mark III has been around for some time and chances are we might see another DSLR from Canon this year, tailored for video use and low-light performance.

Marking a new standard in high-resolution digital SLR photography, the Canon EOS 5DS camera shatters the status quo with a new 50.6 Megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor. The EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R cameras offer the highest resolution capture in the history of EOS: a Canon designed and manufactured, full-frame 50.6 Megapixel CMOS sensor. It captures 8712 x 5813 effective pixels, delivering images with wide dynamic range and an incredible level of realism perfect for large-scale printing, fine art, significant crops and any number of other high-end applications. A new Picture Style setting, called Fine Detail, helps emphasize fine edges, patterns and textures. Thanks to the dual DIGIC 6 sensors, photographs and HD movies are captured and processed with remarkable speed.

The Difference Between the 5Ds and the 5DsR is the Low-Pass Filter

While sharing the same 50.6 Megapixel sensor and photographic capabilities, the difference between the EOS 5DS and the EOS 5DS R cameras is EOS 5DS R’s low-pass filter cancellation effect.

LPF (EOS 5DS)

Standard on every EOS SLR (with the exception of the EOS 5DS R) the low-pass filter serves to eliminate false colours and moiré patterns that can be recorded by the camera’s sensor.

LPF Cancellation (EOS 5DS R)

While the LPF's purpose is to minimize the moiré and false colour artifacting inherent in digital imaging, it does reduce resolving power of the sensor. The EOS 5DS R camera's LPF cancellation effect delivers greater sharpness and finer detail, useful in specialized situations, but the possibility of moiré and colour artifacting is greater however. Fortunately, there are methods to help eliminate these effects while capturing and during post-processing.

Which One is Right for You?

The 50.6 Megapixel CMOS sensor in the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R open tremendous imaging possibilities for photographers who produce large, highly-detailed prints and those looking to do extensive, creative cropping. These two cameras are very similar, but determining which model is right for you largely depends on your application.

For most users, professional and advanced enthusiasts alike, the EOS 5DS will be the ideal choice, and is suited for a wide range of applications, including studio, landscape, gallery and fine-art photography, and more. The EOS 5DS R is a specialized version and is intended for photographers looking to capture the maximum amount of detail possible, and is best suited for landscape, commercial work, or other specialized types of applications. Since the EOS 5DS R offers the LPF cancellation effect, the possibility of moiré and colour artifacts is greater than with the EOS 5DS.

In addition to the new EOS DSLR's Canon unveiled a new lens as a part of their growing L-series lineup - the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens.

 EF 11-24mm f/4L USM brings L-series construction and optics to the widest zoom lens Canon has ever made. With an expansive wide-angle range of 11-24mm, this is an ideal lens for landscapes, interior shots, and unique perspectives on subjects close and far. Its new optical design features Super UD and UD lenses that correct chromatic aberration. Four aspheric lens elements help to minimize distortion from the center of the image to the periphery and throughout the zoom range. A Subwavelength Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) significantly reduce flare and ghosting, while a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm creates beautiful, blurred backgrounds. For silent and fast AF, it features a rear focus system and ring USM, and can be manually focused even when in AF mode.
