Welcome to the latest episode of our weekly roundup of news from the TV and film industry.
This week we are featuring the latest ARRI Tech Talk that focuses on the use of stabilisers with the ALEXA 35, Sony's latest firmware update for the FX3 full-frame camera and the new Proteus 2X anamorphic lens series from LAOWA
ALEXA 35 stabilisers
ARRI has released a new demo video all about the new ALEXA 35 and professional stabilisers. The latest ARRI Tech Talk focuses on how to use the new ALEXA 35 with a wide range of pro stabilisers and specifically demos the different power requirements and mounting options users have. ARRI has some new Stabiliser Adapter Mount plates, or SAM plates for short, which make switching from a tripod or handheld style to a stabiliser rig a much smoother experience without the need to use any tools. This deep dive demo video is a must-watch for any DoP or camera assistant planning to use the new ALEXA 35 camera with the Movi Pro, Ronin 2, Steadicam, or the Trinity or Artemis range of pro stabilisers on an upcoming production.
FX3 2.02 firmware
Sony has released an incremented firmware update for the FX3 full-frame camera. Firmware update 2.02 fixes a few bugs and issues and although it does not add any new big features, it is important for users to keep their cameras up to date with the latest software. Some of the issues that the new firmware fixes have to do with the camera not functioning properly after the previous 2.01 update has been installed, or when you rotate a video file in camera and then it doesn't appear rotated when you transfer it to your computer. Another issue addressed in firmware v2.02 is a fix for the touch operations, which did not work properly in the Imaging Edge Mobile App when the display option has been set to show No Display Info.
LAOWA Proteus 2X Anamorphics
Innovative lens maker LAOWA has announced their new Proteus 2X Anamorphic Series. At the moment, the set consists of 4 lenses - a 35mm, 45mm, a 60mm, and an 85mm all at a maximum aperture of T2. The lenses have been designed to cover Super 35 sensors, have a 2x anamorphic squeeze to produce the classic wide-screen anamorphic look in a 2.4 to 1 aspect ratio. The lens set will also be available in PL mount with an optional Canon EF mount, which is user interchangeable. According to Laowa, their goal for the Proteus Anamorphic line is for them to be the most affordable professional Anamorphic option for cinematographers using Super 35 cameras thanks to their modern optical quality with outstanding sharpness, which can still produce the classic anamorphic look with pleasing oval bokeh and a choice of amber, blue, or silver flares.
