ALEXA 35 Recording Formats Poster
The latest camera from ARRI the ALEXA 35 is a powerful and flexible camera. To give the end user the maximum options it has created 19, that’s right 19 ARRIRAW and Apple ProRes recording formats to choose from incorporating efficient in-camera downsampling and anamorphic de-squeezing. Offering this many options is exciting but can also be overwhelming, so ARRI have created the ALEXA 35 Recording Formats Poster which provides a useful and visual way of summarizing the various recording options available.
ARRIRAW and ProRes
The ALEXA 35 can record in ARRIRAW which is uncompressed and gives you the greatest flexibility or Apple ProRes which is a compressed image data format that gives you immediate access to the data.
Recording Formats
The 19 recording formats are shown on the chart below. The second column on the chart is called the ‘Sensor Mode’. This marks-out the section of the sensor that you’re using. It’s important to check if the image circle of your lens can actually cover it.

The next column is ‘Recording Resolution’ which defines the number of pixels that get recorded into the files, sometimes including a ProRes down sample or a ProRes anamorphic de-squeeze.
